ARTIST STATEMENT
My name is Léa Saleh-Giguère and I am an emerging film director and production designer from Montréal, Québec.
In the last two years, I have graduated from Film Production at Concordia University, established myself as an art director, and began exploring my 2D animation practice. Alongside this gratifying but treacherous creative journey, I also enjoy experimenting with digital art, interactive media, and UX design just like this website I made!
I think my work emanates from delusional optimism, the cognitive mind and the illusion of memory. I explore these themes through different cinematic tools and formats :
My fiction filmmaking approach targets true and personal stories through magic realism. I wish to showcase fantasized and strange realities through liminal art direction and atmospheric lighting as to ideate quotidian life. My stories aim to confess people’s difficult memories and mental troubles all while weaving in positive philosophies.
As an production designer, I build worlds through detail, tone, and history. I believe that a space well dressed can frame and contextualize a scene entirely. I like to think of set decor as 3D painting, malleable and interactive. I focus on the director’s vision as I find the right look, mood, and narrative thread for each story.
My new media practice is more research focused. I explore socio-political issues through the creation of digitally made films, uniquely composed of sourced images, sounds, computer screen cameras, and game engines.
Cinema allows me to capture insecurities, nostalgic memories, and fears in a playful and relatable way. Ultimately, I strive to create light and manipulative experiences for audiences to reckon with emotionally difficult subjects.
